Picking the Right Flooring

Read our tips and tricks when it comes to making the big decision

The million dollar question: How to pick the right flooring for your home? The answer isn’t as complicated as you think- continue reading to hear our tips and tricks when it comes to making the big decision.

First things first, take a deep breath. You’re not the only one who finds this decision overwhelming. The flooring in your home sets the tone for the rest of your interior work, you want to pick the right one!

Before even looking at flooring samples, here are a few things to consider:

TRAFFIC

Identify the high-traffic areas throughout your home to determine the quality you’ll need. Think about hosting areas, pets, kids, food prepping areas, etc. This brings us to our next point…

DURABILITY

It’s crucial to look past marketing scams during this step. Of course every flooring company is going to claim they have “the real deal”. Do your homework by checking things like the wear layer, padding/backing, etc. If this sounds foreign to you, ask a knowledgeable sales representative in your area!

MAINTENANCE

All flooring involves a little maintenance whether it’s polishing, sealing, vacuuming, or even deep scrubbing. Prior to making a commitment, determine realistically how much upkeep you’re willing to do.

STYLE

Everyone's favorite part- the style! Pay close attention to the tones in your flooring. Does it pull on red, yellow, or even green tones? This comes into play when matching up other selections down the road such as cabinetry, paint colors, furniture, etc.

PROPER INSTALLATION

Last but not least, proper installation. If you get anything out of this, know the importance of having a professional install your flooring. There’s nothing wrong with DIY-ing, however, if you’re spending the money on a high-quality product but skimping on the installation, your flooring won’t perform as it’s made to.

Stop into our design center and get the proper help you need! We offer product knowledge, an eye for design, and an A+ installation team!

Space Planning Basics: Make Your Space Make Sense

Give your space a sense of form and function with proper space planning

Style and taste shouldn’t be the only aspects considered when designing your home. Let’s break down a few good ways to make the most out of your space.

Why is Space Planning Important?

Space planning is crucial during the design process to ensure homes have a sense of form and function. This process is very custom to the homeowner, and if done properly, should closely align with their activities and lifestyle.

What to Keep in Mind when Space Planning:

Determine the Type of Space

  • Social areas - kitchen or living room

  • Private areas - bedrooms

  • Productive areas - office or workout room

  • Storage areas - closet or pantry

Establishing these different areas can help the designer/homeowner assess the purpose of each room. Once that’s considered you can begin to think about what type of furniture and lighting is needed in the space.

Understand Traffic and Circulation Patterns

Being mindful of traffic and circulation patterns can be useful for furniture placement and choosing the quality/longevity of your products. For instance, a social area might require a more durable product compared to one going in a private area such as a bedroom.

Consider the Relationship Between Rooms

Having an idea of the relationship between rooms will help ease transition spaces throughout your home. This is helpful when deciding on the placement and size of your furniture.

Here at RCH Home & Design, not only do we offer professional design services but we also sell customized furniture. Let’s team up and make YOUR space make sense.

It’s that time of the year again! Stay up to date with the latest paint trends

It’s that time of year again. The time of year when major paint companies like Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore release each of their 2022 colors of the year!

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Sage 9130

Sherwin Williams Evergreen Sage 9130

For 2022, Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore have both chosen shades of green.

Evergreen Sage 9130 is the chosen color for Sherwin Williams. This beautiful and soothing grey-green color hue also contains hints of blue which makes it perfect for any room of your home. As the Sherwin-Williams website states, “It's a simple but sophisticated wash of beautiful, organic color for spaces that crave a subtle yet stunning statement shade.” The color pairs well with many other neutral colors such as Shoji White, Urbane Bronze, Accessible Beige, Uber Umber, and many other colors that you can find here on their website. No matter what room you choose to put this color in, it is bound to freshen up your space. Want to see how this color is going to look in your house without actually putting it on the walls? Try the ColorSnap® Visualizer app to view the color in your home.

The Benjamin Moore 2022 color of the year is October Mist 1495. According to their color trend brochure, October Mist takes inspiration from the silver-green stem of a flower, thus creating a canvas for you to express yourself creatively. Just as Evergreen Sage is versatile for any room in your house, October Mist is as well. The warm, sage hue provides comfort and relaxation no matter what room you are in and pairs nicely with many other Benjamin Moore colors.

In addition to October Mist, Benjamin Moore has released an additional color trend palette. In the 13 other combinations of colors, there are deep colors like Mysterious and Wildflower as well as neutral, subtle colors like Morning Dew, Natural Linen, and Collector’s Item. Take a peek at some of Hanstone’s most popular products

Did you know that Quartz is the most common mineral on Earth, making up roughly 12% of the Earth’s crust? Rating a seven out of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, Quartz is one of the hardest components of natural granite. The mineral is non-porous which prevents unwelcome germs, bacteria, and mildew; is durable and stain-resistant; and is heat resistant, scratch-resistant, and eco-friendly.

Strato Quartz

Together, the companies have launched two new innovative Quartz collections: Boutique and Unearthed. The company is also continuing to focus on expanding its North American manufacturing capabilities in order to better serve customers.

How To Use Pinterest To Get Inspiration For Your Home

A great starting point for the designing process

How to Use Pinterest To Get Inspiration For Your Home - Graphic.png

When remodeling or choosing to build your new home, it’s hard to know where to begin. For many people, there are so many styles that seem appealing and it can be difficult to decide what you like best.

Take, for example, cabinets. What color of cabinets will you choose? Would you rather them appear wood-stained or white? Or perhaps, you would like to add a pop of color?

What about flooring? Would you like to have carpet in the house or vinyl flooring? Maybe you would like to have carpet in the bedrooms and vinyl flooring throughout the rest of the house? What about tile in the bathroom.

When you add up all of the decisions, it can become overwhelming. That’s why here at RCH, we suggest that our clients create Pinterest boards for each of the specific rooms in their house. Take for example the Kitchen. When thinking about what you want it to look like, you have to consider what you want for backsplash, flooring, hardware, cabinetry, appliances, etc.

On Pinterest, you are able to create specific mood boards where you can compile all of your inspiration pictures. See the example we created below to give you an idea of what we’re talking about:

Screen Shot 2021-09-30 at 12.02.51 PM.png
Screen Shot 2021-09-30 at 12.04.07 PM.png

Pinterest now also gives you the option to sort pins on a specific board into categories. This is how we chose to sort ours:

Screen Shot 2021-09-30 at 1.07.58 PM.png

By sorting pins into categories such as flooring, hardware, floating shelves, backsplash, and cabinets, you will be able to get a better idea of what you want in each specific space in your home.

If you don’t know how to begin searching, try using these keywords:

  • Home Inspiration

  • Kitchen Inspiration

  • Kitchen Ideas

  • Flooring Ideas

  • Interior Design

  • Living Room Inspiration

  • Living Room Design

  • Paint Colors for Home

  • Modern Home Exterior

  • Farmhouse Design

  • Tile Inspiration

  • Bathroom Interior Design

If you need more inspiration, follow our Pinterest account, RCH Home and Design, to view our latest pins. As always, feel free to stop into our showroom at 2343 US Hwy 10 in Detroit Lakes, MN to view our displays and samples.

Loloi is a company committed to the craftsmanship of designing and creating rugs for today’s homes. According to an editorial posted on Loloi’s website, 25 years ago, Amir Loloi, the founder of Loloi Rugs, set out to learn about the intricate creation process of rugs in India. It is here that generations of people have been crafting specially designed rugs by hand for centuries. The process is meticulous and there is little room for error as each rug takes months to create.

“If you’re only looking at a finished rug, it’s easy to forget how much craftsmanship is involved.”

- Amir Loloi

In 2004 when Loloi Rugs was founded, Amir Loloi was intent on bringing the work of rural Indian artisans to the United States. For this growing family business, it’s all about maintaining the integrity of the product and encapsulating the art of rug making.

Here at RCH Home and Design, we have 20+ samples of different styles of Loloi rugs for you to look at. In addition to the samples that we have in-store, Loloi Rugs has a beautiful website where you can look at the thousands of rugs that they have in stock. The Augustus Collection

5 Eco-Friendly Tips for a More Sustainable Home

Green is in and we’re here for it!

5 Eco Friendly Tips for a More Sustainable Home

We wrapped up Earth Month 2020, and this year, there is a lot happening in the world. By honoring the planet, we realize, we’re all connected by the place we call home. Small actions add up to big things, and together we can make the world a better place to live for years to come. Put the planet first by making eco-friendly choices when designing or decorating your home. After all, going green is the new black.

RCH Home & Design works with the hottest names in home decor & furniture to get designer exclusive discounts only available to professionals. Luxury lines like West Elm, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, Anthropologie, Magnolia Home Rugs, Williams-Sonoma Home, Tommy Bahama Furniture, and more! We pass along the savings to you. You could say, it pays to know a designer! ;-)

We’ve curated a few of our earth-friendly favorites for a more sustainable home. Everything is available through RCH Home & Design.

  1. Opt for Organic

When it comes to linens opt for organic material. Organic cotton, linen, hemp, are all widely available for bedding, towels, shower curtains, pillows, and more. Organic material is farmed without the use of pesticides or chemicals, harmful to your health and honey bee populations. Below are some things we are loving over right now with organic material from our vendors.

2. Sustainable Sourcing

Reclaimed wood is environmentally friendly because it preserves nature’s resources by using wood that has already been harvested. It reduces deforestation, which creates devastating global ecological consequences. Using reclaimed wood reduces landfill waste and carbon emissions. RCH Home & Design works with a skilled craftsman that specializes in reclaimed woodwork. He finds unique pieces from all over the world and turns them into beautiful works of art. At the RCH Home & Design Center, there is examples of his work on display.

Our fireplace was created by using a Japanese technique to finish reclaimed wood, called Shou Sugi Ban. The wood is burned, then coated with oil to achieve a rustic look.

Shou Sugi Ban Reclaimed Wood Fireplace

Shou Sugi Ban Reclaimed Wood Fireplace

Whitewashing is another popular technique to finish reclaimed wood. We chose a combination of whitewashed and exposed reclaimed wood beams for our flooring department ceiling.

Whitewashed Reclaimed Wood Ceiling

Shiplap paneling is all the rage these days, made popular by Joanna Gaines on HGTV. You can paint, stain or Shou Sugi Ban treat shiplap panels depending on the look you are going for. At the RCH Home & Design showroom, we have two shiplap walls. Our reception desk features a Shou Sugi Ban charred wood with a black stain. The area rug wall has a white painted shiplap accent wall.

3. Look for Low Emissions

Products that are Greenguard certified help buyers identify interior products and materials that have low chemical emissions. Manufacturers are held to strict guidelines to eliminate pollution. This also ensures that the air quality in your home is safe for you and your family to breathe. RCH Home & Design offers flooring and carpet options with low VOC’s, free of phthalates, recycled materials, and Greenguard certification.

Phenix Flooring’s Expedition line of luxury vinyl planking, or LVP, is Greenguard Gold certified. They offer a variety of contemporary colors. Johnson Hardwood’s Farmhouse Manor has amazing rustic looks our designer loves to use in homes trying to achieve the Modern Farmhouse look and is Greenguard certified.

If you are thinking about painting the interior of your home, consider using a Zero VOC paint. This is especially important for pregnant moms, babies, and pets. Sherwin Williams EcoSelect Zero VOC Interior Latex Paint fits all of the most stringent environmental requirements and has LEED, Greenguard, and Ozone Transport Commission Certification. It is a great budget-friendly paint, for when the wallet is tight. Available in flat, egg-shell and semi-gloss finish and can be tinted to an expanded range of color – including deep shades. RCH Home & Design is an authorized Sherwin Williams dealer. Whether you plan to DIY or hire the best home painter in Detroit Lakes, MN, give us a call for pricing and information. 4. Bring the Outdoors In

biophilia definition.png

Biophilia, the desire or tendency to commune with nature, has had a resurgence in popularity over the last year. Biophilic design combines architecture with natural elements to create peace and harmony in the home. In the 1980s, American biologist E. O. Wilson proposed that humans are genetically wired to prefer natural settings over built environments. In Wilson’s words, we have “an innate and genetically determined affinity … with the natural world”. Psychologists believe the vast amount of time we spend in built environments may contribute to feelings of isolation, tension, and lethargy. The idea behind biophilia is to aid our physical and mental well being, by creating holistic spaces that reinforce our experience with nature.

This look can be achieved with plants and natural lighting, and indirect influences through shapes, forms, and materials that originate in the natural world.

Crystals and natural gemstones like quartz conduct energy, which is why they are used in computer processors. That energy is believed to promote natural healing. Quartz crystals are striking on their own, but now they are being used in all kinds of household decor.

Indoor houseplants bring life and color to your space and help to remove toxic chemicals from your air, like formaldehyde, benzene, trichloroethylene, and carbon monoxide. Since Americans spend most of their time indoors, indoor air quality is essential for good health. Top indoor plants that detoxify your air: Bamboo Palm, English Ivy, Chinese Evergreen, Dragon Tree, Gerber Daisies, Peace Lily, and Spider Plants.

5. Reduce Energy Use

“All forms of electricity generation have an environmental impact on our air, water and land, but it varies. Producing and using electricity more efficiently reduces both the amount of fuel needed to generate electricity and the amount of greenhouse gases and other air pollution emitted as a result. “ according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Reducing your electricity usage is not only better for the planet, but it also saves you hundreds of dollars on utility bills. Solar and clean energy alternatives are becoming more widely available, but if it’s not an option for you, here are some ways you can lower your home’s carbon footprint.

Switch to LED bulbs for your light fixtures. They use significantly less energy and give off a warm inviting light.

Syverson Tile & Stone Fall Vendor Show

Stay up to date on this season’s latest tile trends

Vendors from all over came to display the hottest trends in tile for 2020 at Syverson Tile & Stone’s Fall Vendor Show in Fargo, ND. They displayed all kinds of things we have never seen before, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Some of our favorite vendors from the show were Jeffrey Court, Original Style, Island Stone, and Petra Slate.

One thing the designers at the event discussed, was clients being afraid of bold patterns in tile.

Time to Rethink your Fireplace?

Fireplace Ideas for 2020

RCH Design Center Fireplace

RCH Design Center Fireplace

The fireplace is the most dominant element in any room. Holidays, family photos and memories are created around the hearth. When the temperatures begin to drop, there is nothing better than snuggling up with a book and a blanket by the mantle. Fire creates mood and ambiance,  Naturally, you want this element, and all that borders it, to complement the rest of your home design.

Replacing a fireplace wall is mostly an aesthetic choice, but an updated fireplace can also add resale value.

Wood burning fireplaces can be converted to electric by changing the insert. Old gas fireplaces can be updated for energy efficiency. We have noticed that older houses in northern Minnesota often have fireplaces with brick or redundant knotty pine walls.  What do you do? Cover it, paint it, rip it out? Here are some design ideas to get you started.

Reclaimed Wood

The fireplace is a perfect area to connect with nature inside the house because you are near the element of fire. In order to make yours feel extra outdoorsy, try incorporating natural elements like stone or wood into your design. Reclaimed wood beams have a wide variety of tree species and are a reflection of local historic forests. The diversity of wood found in historic buildings is usually directly related to the diversity of the local historic forests they were built from.

Shiplap

A wood covered wall makes any room feel warmer. Shiplap has become one of the most popular home trends over the last decade. In part due to Joanna Gaines' common use of it on their HGTV show "Fixer Upper." Shiplap is notched fitted wood paneling that was commonly used for waterproof siding in old ships and homes. (Lake Area) The wooden planks used feature a special cut on the top and bottom, so that the planks can be easily pieced together, like a puzzle. Incorporating shiplap onto a fireplace wall helps create clean lines that bring structure to the space. White shiplap can also help brighten the area while black, makes the fireplace more dramatic. If you are going for a modern farmhouse or traditional look, shiplap can really be incorporated into any style. Shiplap also makes a great background for seasonal decor and family photos.

Millwork

If your style is refined, sophisticated or traditional, custom millwork could be for you. If going for more of a traditional look try using a wood stain, and if doing something more clean-cut try painting.

Tile

Tile fireplaces are perfect for the most creative and fashion-forward clients. You can get really specific to your color palette and dress up an otherwise traditional or mundane room. It also allows you to incorporate a pattern to add some dimension and depth to the space.

Indoor / Outdoor Fireplaces

If you really want a showstopper in your home... this ends up being a real show stopper. Makes your home stand out. It makes a space feel bigger. It is perfect if you have a nice lake view or an outdoor patio. To expand your entertaining area and makes it a place that people want to sit around.  See through fireplaces are the ultimate show stoppers.
