Have you been thinking about getting some third-party input on your home project, but have finally run into the question: what is the difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator? Well, we are here to help! In short, while interior designers may decorate, interior decorators do not design.

That may be a little confusing at first but let us explain.

To become an interior designer, you need to go through formal training. This is either a two-year or four-year program. During this, one learns the art and science of understanding people’s behavior to create spaces within a building. The work that they do in school usually includes studying color, fabric, drawing, space planning and more. On the other side, interior decorators don’t have as high of a need for standardized education. Most will go through a training program to learn basic principles of design but they are not required to.

Interior designers also have a large focus on space planning in their education process. While in school, designers take an in-depth look at how space is being used. They also study what changes will make the space more functional as well as aesthetically pleasing. Interior decorators, on the other hand, are focused only on aesthetics. They are there more suited to furnish and adorn a space with fashionable and beautiful things.

How to Choose

While that narrows down the duties of what each profession can bring to the table, you may be wondering, which one is best for my project? Interior designers are your best choice when you are working on a remodel and require closer guidance. Interior designers can help you from the ground up, navigate the day-to-day tasks, and coordinate with contractors. Designers work with you from the initial floor plans to placing the last decorative accent. An interior decorator might be the right choice if you are just looking for a set of savvy eyes to redecorate a space.

Keep in mind that each decorator and designer may be different. Therefore, we suggest checking out portfolios or galleries. This way you can see the services of the person you are thinking of working with.
